The Cultivation Foundation Seal

Module 1 · before you touch anything

Lay the room out before you get there.

A stage plot is the drawing you send ahead so the venue, the band and whoever is running sound all turn up expecting the same room. It is the first thing a working engineer produces for a show and the last thing a beginner thinks of. Drag the band and the gear where they actually stand, turn a wedge to face a player, and save it. It works on a phone.

This feeds the practice desk. Whatever you lay out here, the practice desk builds its channels from — so the desk you learn gain and EQ on is your band, not a made-up one. Lay the stage out first, then go and mix it.

Before the gig

The stage plot

Lay the room out before you get there. Whoever is running sound for the show is responsible for this — get the venue's measurements, drag the band and the gear into place, and send the picture ahead. It works on a phone, and it saves as you go.
