Set the stage

Everything on the left is real equipment, photographed for this program. Put it on the stage, wire it up, and hand it in. Nothing here can hurt anybody — which is the only place you get to find out what a wrong cable actually does.

The job

The band is coming to town

There is a bass player, a drummer, a keyboard player, a guitarist, and three vocalists. The drummer sings, the bass player sings, and the guitar player sings. They will all need their own separate wedges, and the lead singer is the bass player so his mic will slightly be louder than the backup singers.

  • Set the stage, then wire it. Click a piece, then click another, to run a cable between them.
  • A microphone cannot reach a speaker. Signal goes to a console first — that is module 1.
  • Three singers means three vocal microphones and three separate monitor mixes.
  • The kit will not fit on sixteen channels alongside everything else. You have a sub mixer.

The stage — up close

Wherever the back wall is in the room you picked, the band sets up four to five feet off it so any emergency door stays clear. Drop gear straight onto this.

The tech table — from above

Looking straight down at the table the way you stand over it. Lay out the console, the receivers, the work light — everything that lives at front of house, in the order you actually want to reach it.

How it is marked

On what the room can see.

It checks that the gear the brief needs is on the stage, that it is actually wired to something, and that the signal goes where signal goes — sources into a console, wedges fed from the console and not from a microphone.

It also counts the connections that would have cost money. Speaker level into a microphone input is not marked wrong, it is marked as destroyed equipment, because that is what it is.
